Floating Ball Valve Working Principle
What is Floating Ball Valve?
A floating ball valve is a type of ball valve where the ball is not fixed in place but floats between two seats. The ball is held in place by the upstream pressure, which creates a seal between the ball and the downstream seat. The upstream seat provides additional sealing and prevents the ball from being pushed too far downstream.

The working of a floating ball valve is relatively simple. When the valve is in the closed position, the ball is pushed against the downstream seat by the force of the fluid. This creates a seal and prevents the flow of fluid. When the valve is opened, the ball is moved away from the downstream seat, creating a gap for the fluid to flow through.
To close the valve, the ball is pushed back against the downstream seat by the force of the fluid. The ball is free to move within the valve body, allowing it to float and adjust its position to provide a tight seal against the downstream seat. When the pressure on the upstream side of the valve decreases, the ball will move back towards the upstream seat, providing additional sealing and preventing leakage.
Floating ball valves are widely used in a variety of industries, including oil and gas, chemical, and water treatment. They are favoured for their reliability, ease of maintenance, and ability to handle high pressures and temperatures.
